SPORTS

At St Andrew’s Junior School, sport plays a central role in developing confident, well-rounded boys. Our wide range of codes, expert coaching, and strong traditions allow every boy to grow, compete, and discover a lifelong love for physical activity.

cricket

Cricket is one of our main focuses at St Andrew’s and it has a rich traditional history spanning decades.

Mini cricket is played by Grade 1 – 3 boys and Grade 4 – 7 play in the city’s A- league. Cricket is played in term 1 and 4 by all junior boys.

Boys are coached by professional coaches who are players, old boys and staff.

The age groups hone their skills in age appropriate ways to ensure that boys remain fit, healthy and love the game.

RUGBY

Rugby plays a central role in the life of our junior school, with the season in Term 2. Boys are given the opportunity to develop their skills, grow in confidence, and experience the values of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship.

Beyond the regular season, our programme is enriched with tours and derby fixtures, giving boys the chance to travel and engage with other schools. These experiences not only strengthen their love for the game but also foster camaraderie and lasting friendships.

Competing in the highly regarded City A League, our teams strive for excellence and embrace the competitive nature of the sport. As a proud traditional boys’ school, rugby remains an integral part of our culture and heritage, shaping character and instilling a deep sense of belonging.

Over the years, many of our players have gone on to Craven Week level — a testament to the strength of our programme and the dedication of our boys and coaches. With the entire school now competing in the A League, we are excited about the future of rugby and are confident that it will continue to grow.

Sport Development Program

We have one of the best physical development programs in the country. Our program’s exercises are worked out by a sport scientist and carefully integrated to enhance the physical education requirements and to cover all the conditioning fundamentals of the sports we have as a school. Most of our team sports are developed in this period and enhancement programs run in the afternoon to make sure we have a good balance between a holistic approach, but with opportunities for gifted boys with exceptional talent to excel.

In the foundation phase we focus very much on exposing boys to as many sports codes as possible, as we value the cross development benefits it possesses.

Hockey

Hockey is the sport at St Andrew’s that is played by most of our boys. We are very competitive, and the boys really enjoy it. We also have a rich hockey tradition and have big plans to develop the talent of our boys even more. Hockey is formally played in term 3, but our more senior teams do play preliminary matches in term 2.

Athletics

Athletics is the sport that brings the boys together in the beginning of the year and sets the tone for some “gees” and having fun. We have had a few wonderful results in recent years with some boys that have represented the school at the Primary school SA’s. Athletics is a term 1 sport.

SWIMMING

Swimming is offered as a summer sport. Training takes place after school for the Foundation Phase where the focus is on water safety and stroke correction. Swimmers in squads train out of school. Most of our boys are club swimmers. Over the years our boys have achieved outstanding results.

The Inter-house gala is swum early in the season in order to be used as indicator for team selection for the Inter-Schools gala.
