OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

At St Andrew’s, learning goes far beyond the classroom. Our boys are encouraged to explore their talents, develop new skills, and embrace opportunities that build character, confidence, and creativity. From the arts to service, sports, and public speaking, our extracurricular programmes provide a well-rounded education that nurtures the whole child.

DRAMA

In the junior grades, drama, music and stage performances play a big role in the annual calendar with every grade being involved in a production. These productions involve the Music Academy, the class teachers, the art classes and of course parents.
It is a wonderful showcase of the primary school’s creativity!

Junior Interact Club

The Saint’s Junior Interact Club helps our young boys develop leadership skills while learning the value of Service Above Self. Through Interact (International Action), they engage with the less privileged in Bloemfontein, South Africa, and beyond, building lasting relationships with non-profit organisations.

Our boys and families actively donate and support projects such as CANSA Shavathon, Slipper Day, Casual Day, Santa’s Shoebox, animal shelters, orphanages, and old age homes. Living our Saints Mission and Values, we strive to make a positive impact in our community.

chess

We have a wonderful chess program at the junior school. We start at grade 1 with teaching the boys the fundamentals. In Grade 1 and 2 we take the classes apart to make sure the groups are smaller for individual attention. From Grade 3 – 7 the boys go together as a group and build on the foundation that has been set in the first 2 years.

We participate in local leagues. We have some wonderful plans to grow the game and to get the Saints community even more behind our boys.

Public Speaking

Public speaking was started in the junior school in 2019 to help boys find their voices and gain confidence to speak in front of an audience.

The club meets regularly where they are introduced to various speaking and presenting skills, allowing them to hone those skills without fear of embarrassment or criticism. The club participates in public speaking competitions, the biggest being the “On the Tip of your Tongue” National Competition. So far there has been a national winner every year in at least one category.

Eco-Schools Programme

St Andrew’s is in its fifth year of the Eco-Schools programme, promoting environmental responsibility across the school. We proudly received our Gold Flag this year and are working towards the International Flag in 2026.

We continue to reduce paper use, expand gardening projects, and involve boys in hands-on environmental learning. Initiatives like recycling and participation in the Enviro Quiz encourage sustainable thinking.

Looking ahead, we aim to introduce solar power and a grey water system as we continue building a greener future.

Photography Club

The photography club is open to boys from Grade 6 – 12 and the photos are used on a daily basis on social media, advertising and in the annual magazine. Junior photographers enter the Bloemshow, where over the past few years we have had good results.

Photography is more than just taking pictures. It is about seeing the world creatively. In this club, boys learn composition, artistic expression, and digital editing skills while capturing school events, sports, and everyday moments. The Bloemfontein Photography Club regularly assists in workshops and competitions for the Senior grades. All experience levels are welcome to explore and develop their visual storytelling skills.

Chapel Choir

The Chapel Choir, founded in 1863, and the oldest activity at the school, welcomes boys from Grade 4 to Matric. The choir performs traditional, classical, and contemporary pieces at school services, outreach events, and tours. It is a proud tradition, one that offers belonging but also a brotherhood in music.

Enrichment

Each Wednesday in the term, just after school, boys are offered a fun enrichment workshop, a life skill, a craft, a new hobby or interest. Boys choose a different club each term and attend the workshops on a weekly basis. Clubs include, gardening, photography, baking, mechanics, DIY, art, drama, public speaking, leadership and more.
