Education at St Andrew’s is designed to extend the boys physically and intellectually.  Sport is not an end in itself, but an opportunity for our pupils to work in a team and to develop qualities of leadership and loyalty.  We encourage involvement, commitment and good sportsmanship.

The school has competed successfully over a number of years in a number of different sporting activities and our pupils have often gone on to represent provincial and national teams.  Last year 35% of the pupils at the school were rewarded for their efforts with selection for provincial or national schools’ teams.  We pride ourselves on the fact that we continue to offer opportunities for learners of differing abilities and backgrounds.

St Andrew’s has a proud sporting tradition dating from the first Cricket match in 1880 and the first Rugby match in 1916. A number of St Andrew’s pupils have represented South Africa at both school and senior level in a wide variety of sports such as Cricket, Rugby, Squash, Swimming, Hockey, Tennis and Polo.

In 2014 the school’s first Squash team and the first Cricket team were ranked amongst the top ten schools in the country.  All of our teams enter local league competitions and we achieve good results against local rivals.  Our boys also have the opportunity to travel away on tours and our senior boys play derby fixtures against schools from Kwazulu Natal and Gauteng.

The school offers top quality facilities to all the boys.  In addition to four turf cricket wickets, the school has five squash courts, 5 tennis courts, 3 mini-tennis courts, 1 basketball court, one swimming pool, three rugby fields, four hockey fields and regular use of two astroturf hockey fields at the University of the Free State.
