17 August 2016 – The Saint Andrew’s and Grey 1st XI hockey teams will contest the final of the Bloemfontein League after Saints defeated Grey 2nds 1-0 in their semi-final clash at the University Astro on Monday evening. Grey booked their place with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Grey under-16 A side.
In a tense, sometimes tetchy clash, Saints created the better chances but, especially in the second half, were put under territorial pressure by the hard-working Grey outfit.
Saints had the ball in the back of the net midway through the first half from a penalty corner, but had to settle for a retake of the corner after an early break by one of the Grey defenders.
Not long after, however, the boys in blue took the lead. After a scramble in the circle, it was Mokotjo Sematlane who found the finish that decided the contest.
The game then lost some of its shape as Saints forced a lot of passes working their way out of defence and Grey, in turn, failed to find their front runners as they tried to counter-attack.
With Saints having downed the Grey 1st XI 4-2 earlier this season, after running out to a 3-0 lead only five minutes into the game, there will surely be a lot of emotion in the final. Much in the title-decider could depend on how the teams handle that aspect of the big occasion.
