Cultural activities at St Andrew’s School are well entrenched. Our Junior Choir has established a solid tradition while our Chapel Choir performs in the school chapel, in local churches and at various functions. One of the highlights on the school programme is the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. This event is an opportunity for the school community to gather and worship God while focusing on the real meaning of Christmas.
Our drama and debating groups have set a high standard of achievement in Free State circles. The school has a rich drama tradition and one of the highlights of the 150th celebrations was the musical production of West Side Story in September. A pleasing addition has been the enthusiastic interest in junior drama and a number of junior dramatic productions have given the junior boys wonderful opportunities. The school hall (the Clegg Centenary Hall) is well-equipped with modern lighting and sound equipment and provides an ideal venue for dramatic productions. In addition the school has an additional hall at Victoria Park.
Over the years our debaters have produced very good results in local and provincial competitions and some of the school’s debaters have gone on to make their mark nationally. Our senior debating team won the local league competition in 2014.
Music lessons in most instruments offer the individual pupil the opportunity to find his forte. It has been pleasing to see the increasingly active role of pupils in providing the musical lead at a number of functions. The school hosts a number of music concerts throughout the year.
The school has an active photographic club and the boys perform a valuable service throughout the year.
