Saints Music Academy shines at Battle of the Bands

The Saint Andrew’s Music Academy travelled to Johannesburg and Pretoria on the weekend of 24-25 May to play some gigs, learn a lot, and participate in the Saint Mary’s Waverley Battle of the Bands. It started slowly, but ended with a bang, which had everyone on a high.

Saints Music Academy is about much more than music

7 August 2018 – Music is, simplistically put, about sound, but the reasons why we play music, love music and share music are much deeper and more diverse. The Saints Music Academy is about music, but it is also about so much more than that, so we sat down for an in-depth discussion with two matric boys, Martin van Rooyen and Pranav Poken, both veterans of the Academy, to find out more about the role it has played in their lives.

Meaning and reason are important drivers in our lives, so why did they pursue music?

Meet the Teachers: Deryn Soldo

19 June 2018 – Deryn Soldo joined the teaching staff at Saint Andrew’s at the beginning of the second term. It was a new post for her, but the territory was anything but unfamiliar. 3 April – Saturday, 1 April 2017, marked exactly a decade since Chris Thomas became Headmaster of Saint Andrew’s School. A former Head Boy, he succeeded the much-loved Roy Gordon.

In an interview on Friday, he revealed that he had applied for the Headmaster’s position at his previous school, Stirling, in East London, but he was then asked to apply for the position at Saints. The timing wasn’t ideal, with a son in grade 10 and a daughter in grade 11, but it worked out well in the end.

“It actually worked out far better than we had anticipated”

Saints a perfect fit for Marelise

7 February 2017 – New Saint Andrew’s junior school teacher Marelise van Niekerk’s first job was in the corporate sector, but the regimented life of working for a major corporation weighed heavily on her shoulders. Then she discovered teaching through helping one of her brothers with his work. It was what she wanted to do.

However, moving into teaching was not a simple matter. When she was 20 and living in Empangeni, she was approached by a school in KwaZulu-Natal to teach art.

“He said I shouldn’t be a teacher!”

Back to the future for Lisle

1 February 2017 – Like her namesake Lizel Jurgensen, Lisle (as in Liezel) Loots is not a newcomer to Bloemfontein. She moves to Bloem and Saint Andrew’s from Margate, but Bloemfontein was her home before she left for the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

Nonetheless, returning to the City of Roses from the easy-going coastal lifestyle of Margate takes a little getting used to.”It’s quite a change, but not too great. We lived in Bloemfontein before we went to Port Shepstone to Shelley Beach. I stayed here for three years after completing my studies at North West University in Potch,” Lisle said in a recent chat.
